North Rhine-Westphalia: Exit polls show clear 35% victory for CDU

Lead in the rulers Christian Democratic Party (CDU) with 35% (33% in the 2017 elections) give the exit polls of the first channel of the German public television ARD in its particularly important elections North Rhine-Westphalia, of the most populous state of Germany.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) secures 27.5% (31.2%), followed by the Greens with 18.5%, tripling the percentage of 2017 (6.4%), the Alternative for Germany (AfD) with 6% (7.4%) and the Liberals (FDP), which are on the verge of 5% from 12.6% in 2017.

The current CDU-FDP coalition government is now considered extremely difficult to continue as it is, while it is not unlikely that the Christian Democrats will not even be able to nominate a prime minister, but to form a government led by the SPD.
