With strong laptop demand and the gradual resolution of a shortage of components such as controller chips, the shipment of laptop panels hit an all-time high last quarter. In total, 72.27 million units were shipped from July to September, which is 7.1% more than in the second quarter. Such data were published by the analytical company TrendForce.
According to TrendForce, the explosive growth in notebook sales, driven by the shift to remote work and training, is gradually slowing down, which leads to a decrease in demand for certain types of panels. In particular, this applies to consumer laptops and Chromebooks. Falling demand for Chromebooks led to the fact that sales of 11.6-inch panels, which are most often used in Chromebooks, fell 28.3% in the third quarter from the second, to 10.88 million units. Shipments of such panels are expected to continue to decline in the current quarter.
However, demand in the commercial segment remains strong, with suppliers quickly shifting their focus to 14 “and 15.6” panels. As a result, panels of these sizes were shipped 46.45 million units during the quarter, up 20.2% from the previous quarter.
At the moment, TrendForce predicts that 71.15 million laptop panels will be shipped in the fourth quarter, and 278.1 million units for the whole of 2021, which is 23.2% more than last year. About 279 million laptop panels are projected to ship in 2022, an almost complete halt in supply growth.
