Half of Gazprom’s customers have opened accounts with Gazprombank, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said, as Moscow seeks to force its customers to pay in rubles for gas.
Russia cut off gas supplies to Bulgaria and Poland in April after refusing to comply with a request for European buyers to start paying in rubles for Russian gas, raising concerns that other countries could be next.
Finnish state-owned Gasum has refused to switch to the new system and said this week it would settle its dispute with Russia’s Gazprom over its payment in rubles in an arbitration process.
Novak stressed in a forum that some large companies had already paid for Russian gas under the new scheme and that Moscow would soon know for sure which companies paid and which refused to do so.
“Gas payments under key contracts are imminent. And there is information that some large companies have already opened accounts, paid (gas bills) and are ready to pay on time,” Novak said.
“In the coming days we will see a final list of who paid in rubles and who refused,” he added.
