The fifth round of negotiations between the United States and Iran was completed on Friday (23) in Rome, with limited progress, but without results, according to the Omanense mediator, in charge of facilitating negotiations.
The discussions, held at Oman’s embassy in Italy, lasted more than three hours and were led by Iranian Foreign Minister Araqchi Abbas and the US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff.
Oman played the role of indirect mediator during all negotiations.
Oman Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sayyid Badr Bin Hamad Bin Hamood Albusaidi, said the fifth round of negotiations between Iran and the US “was completed today in Rome with some progress but not conclusive.”
Leaders prepare for new rounds
There is a lot at stake for both sides. American President Donald Trump wants to restrict Tehran’s potential to produce a nuclear weapon that could trigger a regional nuclear arms race and perhaps threaten Israel.
The Islamic Republic, in turn, wants the end of sanctions on its oil -based economy.
Following the meeting on Friday (23), Oman’s mediator added that the remaining issues should be clarified in the coming days to allow the parties involved to advance towards the common goal of reaching a sustainable agreement.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araye said the fifth round of negotiations between Iran and the US has been the most professional so far.
The leaders decided that both parties would review them more in detail and would make agreements for the next round, which, expected, “will introduce some details” if both parties accept new solutions, he said.
Indirect negotiations will not be completed in two or three rounds due to their complexity, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, adding that “the fact that we are now walking a reasonable path is (a kind of) progress.”
Meanwhile, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Ministry spokesman Estaeli Baghaei wrote on the social media platform X that the fifth round was held in a “calm and professional” environment, and that the date and place of the next round will be set and announced later.
Previously, Iran and the United States held four rounds of indirect negotiations mediated by Oman, from April, about the Tehran nuclear program and the survey of American sanctions, three of which in Mascate in Oman and one in Rome.
In recent days, US authorities have repeatedly demanded that Iran completely cease uranium enrichment, a firmly rejected request by Tehran.
Tensions between countries
In his first term, in 2018, Trump abandoned a nuclear pact of 2015 between the main powers and Iran. Since returning to power this year, he has restored a maximum pressure on Tehran and retirement US sanctions that continue to harm the Iranian economy.
Iran responded by increasing enrichment far beyond the boundaries of the 2015 pact.
Wendy Sherman, a former US Supplier who led the US trading team that arrived at the 2015 agreement, noted that Tehran has enrichment as a matter of sovereignty.
