OECD: After recovery, growth in several major economies likely to slow

The strong rebound in growth that has been seen since the 2020 economic crisis triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic is expected to start to slow in the near term in several of the world’s largest economies, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The assessment is based on the reading of composite leading indicators, which seek to anticipate inflection points in the activity.

In a report published on Monday (17), the OECD says that the data suggest a “visible” drop in growth momentum in Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and Canada.

In the United States, the euro zone and Japan, the indication is of stable growth.

Among large emerging economies, the OECD survey anticipates a sharp slowdown in growth in Brazil and a loss of momentum in China, which is now below its long-term trend.

In the case of Russia, “signs of moderation” appeared in the pace of growth and in India, the projection is for stable growth.

The OECD points out that uncertainties related to the pandemic, in particular the impact of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, could cause more intense than usual fluctuations in leading indicators, which need to be viewed “with caution” in the current situation.
