German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will be in Canada from August 21 to 23 to discuss with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau the two countries’ support for Ukraine, energy security and energy transition issues, Ottawa announced Saturday.
During his visit the chancellor will visit Montreal, Toronto, as well as Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador.
During their talks in Montreal, the two leaders are expected to address their “unwavering support for Ukraine” and the global consequences of Russia’s “illegal and unjustified invasion,” Trudeau’s offices said in a statement.
They will also discuss their cooperation to “defend energy security and accelerate the global transition to clean energy”, in particular by ensuring “access to key resources such as clean hydrogen and critical minerals”, as well as effort to prevent climate change.
In Stephenville, the two prime ministers are expected to visit an exhibition of energy companies using hydrogen, an area where Canada and Germany are working together to promote cleaner forms of energy.
In Toronto, Mr. Trudeau is expected to speak during a Canadian-German business forum.
He will also participate on August 23 in a digital summit of heads of state and government participating in the international platform on Crimea, a Ukrainian initiative aimed at escalating international mobilization against Russia’s 2014 annexation of the peninsula.
Last month, Ottawa decided to return to Germany turbines — after they had been repaired in Canada — intended for the Nord Stream gas pipeline to ease the energy crisis in Europe, particularly Germany, a decision that was heavily criticized by the government in Kyiv .
Messrs. Solz and Trudeau met privately in June on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Germany.
Germany is the main market for Canada’s goods exported to the European Union and its sixth largest trading partner worldwide.
