THE Omicron variant of coronavirus has been identified in about 15 american states so far, however Delta variant remains the prevailing Covid-19 case in the country, said today the head of the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“We know we have a few dozen cases and we are monitoring them closely. “And every day we hear about more and more possible cases, so that number is likely to increase,” CDC director Rochelle Valensky told ABC News, adding that more data was needed.
At least 15 states have reported Omicron cases: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, New York, Peng Wisconsin, according to a Reuters report.
Louisiana also reported a suspicious case, while the person announced in New Jersey had previously traveled to Georgia, which also announced the positive test.
However, Valensky said Delta accounts for the majority of cases in the United States, and as vaccines are known to protect against morbidity and death, health officials hope they will also mitigate Omicron’s impact.
According to the official, out of 90,000-100,000 cases per day, 99.9% of them are Delta variant.
“We are currently dealing with an issue with the Delta in the United States,” Valensky said on “This Week.”
