Omicron Mutation – Netherlands: And 14th case among passengers from South Africa

The Omicron mutation frightens Europe, with the Netherlands announcing a new case of the alarming variant between of passengers arriving from South Africa and tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday upon arrival in Amsterdam. The total number of people wearing the variant now stands at 14, it was announced today by the Minister of Health of the Netherlands.

“Thanks to the sequencing, it has now been confirmed to 14 people that it is the Omicron variant,” Minister Hugo de Jong said in a letter to parliament.

Yong announced yesterday that 13 passengers who had left South Africa and tested positive for covid-19 on Friday, upon arrival in Amsterdam, wore the Omicron variant.

These passengers belonged to the group of 61 passengers who were diagnosed positive upon arrival in Siphol, out of 624 passengers who had arrived in Amsterdam by air on two KLM flights from South Africa.

The analysis of the samples “indicates that the infected people were probably infected with the virus in various areas and in no case during the flight,” Yong said, according to the Athens News Agency.

The results of the other samples analyzed are expected today.

In solitary confinement, a couple was arrested after trying to escape the quarantine hotel

A couple accused of that tried to escape the quarantine covid-19 where he had been placed by the authorities, having been diagnosed positive in the young coronavirus, was taken to a hospital, where he is being held in solitary confinement, it became known today by an official.

The couple, a Spaniard and a Portuguese national, according to authorities, left the hotel, where travelers who had been tested positive for the virus were transported, after arriving at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, from South Africa.

“They were taken to a hospital in another part of the Netherlands to make sure they were in isolation. “They are now in what is called forced isolation,” said Petra Faber, a spokeswoman for the municipality of Haarlemmermer, where Schiphol is located.

The couple left the hotel on Sunday and boarded a plane to Spain, where they were arrested by authorities at the airport, Faber said.

In statements, however, on the state television network of Catalonia TV3, Carolina Pimenta denied that she and her partner deliberately tried to avoid quarantine.

Pimenta, who was traveling with her partner Andres Sant, said she thought she was exempt from the five-day quarantine because she had a negative test and had been ill with Covid-19 for the past six months.

According to her, she was allowed to leave the hotel by Dutch police and health officials and passed all security checks at the airport with her passport and a PCR test.

Shortly after boarding, “I was suddenly called. “Acting very aggressively, the police treated us like criminals, when their own colleagues had given us permission,” she said.
