The US military launched a raid on Wednesday (25/1) in a cave in the mountains of the north Somaliaduring which one of its leaders was killed jihadist organization Islamic stateas it became known yesterday Thursday (26/1) by the Ministry of Defense of USA.
US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that Bilal al-Sudani – the alleged leader of IS in Somalia – was killed along with 10 other fighters of the jihadist group. The US president gave the green light for the operation Joe Biden and the raid was launched within 24 hours, they pointed out.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin says in a statement that “Bilal al-Sudani was responsible for encouraging the Islamic State’s growing presence in Africa and funding its operations around the world, including in Afghanistan.”.

A White House spokesman told reporters in Washington that the raid had been in the works for “several months.” He emphasized that there were no casualties either among the American soldiers who participated in the operation or among the civilian population in the area. He pointed out that simulation exercises of the operation of the special forces were carried out in locations where targeted interventions had been made in order to imitate the terrain morphology of the area.
“We were ready to capture Bilal al-Sudani,” the White House spokesman said..
President Biden “has made it abundantly clear that we are committed to identifying and eliminating all terrorist threats against the US and the American people, wherever they may be, even in the most remote places”another US government official said.
Last August, the leader of al-Qaeda, the Egyptian Ayman al-Zawahri, was killed in a US raid in Afghanistan.
