In an interview with CNN Brasil, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said that “the European Union is closer to Washington than to Beijing”. The diplomat also pointed out that the dispute of forces between the United States and China does not represent a new “Cold War”.
“It is certain that the confrontation between the United States and China will shape the 21st century. And the pandemic has accelerated this weight, this influence of Asia in world affairs. This bipolarity is not exactly the same as in the Cold War, when the Soviet Union faced the United States militarily – and only militarily -. The European Union will always be closer to Washington than to Beijing because we share the same political and economic system. But being an ally does not mean being aligned”, he stated.
The chancellor of the European Union also indicated that Brazil’s efforts in environmental preservation should facilitate a future trade agreement with Mercosur.
“It is true that, in the European parliament and in some countries, there is great concern about illegal deforestation, which poses a threat to climate change. And the agreement with Mercosur will hardly be ratified if this concern, which is undoubtedly legitimate, is not taken into account”, stated Borell.
