In a debate held by CNN This Friday (1st), Senators Marcelo Castro (MDB-PI) and Lasier Martins (Podemos-RS) discussed the approval of the new Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) of Fuels, also called “PEC of Benefits”, in two rounds of voting in the Federal Senate.
Senator Marcelo Castro (MDB-PI) related the favorable result of the PEC to the electoral period. “If there wasn’t an election now on October 2nd, probably this bundle of goodness wouldn’t have come out. And in the dimension and depth with which it came out,” he stated.
Despite this, Castro agreed with the usefulness of the proposal. “I think that this PEC, despite being in the election year, is very useful and necessary, especially with the social and economic situation that Brazil is experiencing at the moment.”
Defending the proposal, Senator Lasier Martins (Podemos-RS) cited the country’s economic situation. “Are we or are we not living in a state of emergency? I understand that we are: 33 million Brazilians starving, inflation, unemployment. This is the reality we are living in,” he said.
In relation to the elections, Martins stated that he understands “that, indeed, they have an inevitable electoral content. But then I come back to the question: what is the greater value? To help the population that is going through terrible difficulties or not?”.
In the first round, 72 senators were in favor and 1 against — Senator José Serra (PSDB-SP). In the second round, the result was 67 to 1.
“Whoever is starving does not want to know if they are in the electoral period, if they are outside the electoral period, if it is a PEC, if it is a Bill. She is in need of the resource to survive and to feed her family. So, what we can say and make a criticism that is valid, as is this criticism that Senator Serra made, is that the government could have taken these measures earlier”, evaluated the emedebista.
Martins cited the pandemic and the invasion of Ukraine as arguments for approval at this time. “We are paying tribute to a set of factors that have exploded now, coinciding with the pandemic, which cannot be denied in this examination, and the War in Ukraine. So it’s a number of factors,” he said.
