One dead and one injured in attack on MSF convoy – The organization calls for the evacuation of its staff

The Doctors Without Borders they condemn the “intentional”, as they say, convoy attackor carrying their personnel, as a result of which one person was killed and another was injured. The motorcade which bore obvious markings and all the insignia of the organization, carried a total of 137 people, consisting of Palestinian MSF staff members and their families, including 65 children headed for southern Gaza. The group, it says, had informed both sides of the conflict about the move, but that did not stop it from being attacked.

The announcement of Doctors Without Borders in detail:

On 18 November 2023, a relative of an MSF staff member was killed and another injured in an attack on a MSF convoy attempting to evacuate 137 people – Palestinian MSF staff members and their families. They were trapped for a week in the MSF facilities located near the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza. Doctors Without Borders condemns this deliberate attack in the strongest terms.

Yesterday morning, at 9:00 a.m. local time, a MSF motorcade consisting of five cars, all with clearly marked with the insignia of Doctors Without Borders, including on the roofs of cars, with 137 people, consisting of MSF Palestinian staff members and their families, including 65 children, left MSF facilities (hostel, office, outpatient clinics located near Al-Shifa Hospital) heading towards southern Gaza for a safer place. Since 11 November they have been trapped under fire due to the ongoing fighting and since then MSF has repeatedly appealed for their safe evacuation.

Doctors Without Borders had informed both sides of the conflict about this move. The motorcade passed through the route indicated by the Israeli army and reached Salah Al Deen Street, along with other civilians who were trying to leave the area. The motorcade reached the last checkpoint near Wadi Gaza, which was very crowded at the time because of the extensive checks on Palestinians by Israeli forces. Despite the information they shared with the Israeli army, they were not allowed to cross the checkpoint for hours. Our staff later heard gunshots, prompting them to turn back in fear and head to the MSF facility, located approximately 7 kilometers from the checkpoint.

On their return, between 3:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. local time, the convoy was attacked on Al-Wehda Street near the intersection of Said Al A’as Street, near the offices of Doctors Without Borders. Two of the cars of Doctors Without Borders were hit on purposekilling one family member of the MSF staff and injuring another.

MSF is again calling for the urgent evacuation of our staff, as well as thousands of other people trapped by the fighting and living in extremely poor conditions in northern Gaza. We ask immediately ceasefirewhich is the only way to create corridors for the safe evacuation of trapped civilians.
