African countries have so far received only 82.7 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine, the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (ACDC) announced on Thursday.
The health agency, part of the African Union, noted that Only 1.39% of the total population of Africa has been fully vaccinated as 61.3 million doses of vaccine have been administered.
According to the ACDC, 57 million tests have been performed in Africa so far, of which 1.5 million last week, a 6% increase over the previous year. According to the institution, the overall positivity index is at 11.1%.
Until yesterday Thursday, the official pandemic of the new coronavirus on the continent had reached 160,648 dead out of a total of 6,335,702 infections.
The five countries that have secured the most vaccine doses to date are Morocco, South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria and Algeria. The Kingdom of Morocco has provided 21.3 million installments, always according to ACDC data.
Spain will donate 7.5 million installments, mainly to Latin American countries
Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday that Madrid would begin distributing 7.5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to other countries, especially in the Latin American region, within a week.
In an interview with CNN en Español from Los Angeles, Mr. Sanchez clarified that the vaccines will be donated through COVAX, a mechanism led by the World Health Organization. Their distribution will be completed in 2021.
