Operation arrests five people from a gang that scammed the elderly in RS

Three men and two women were arrested last Thursday (12), suspected of being part of a gang that scammed elderly people in Rio Grande do Sul. Investigations indicate that the criminals used the “Tale of the Winning Ticket” .

Investigations revealed that one of the victims lost R$100,000 in a single scam.

In a joint action, the São Francisco de Paula Police Department, with the support of the Caxias do Sul Police Department and the Caxias do Sul Regional Police Department, launched Operation Payback. The operation targeted a gang specialized in winning ticket scams against the elderly in several regions of the country.

Through the police intelligence unit, the scheme was dismantled after identifying the destination of the money, obtained illegally, in addition to identifying those responsible for the bank accounts used by the gang.

Arrests and seizures

While executing arrest and search and seizure warrants in Caxias do Sul and Farroupilha, the police officers arrested five members of the criminal organization and seized cell phones and ammunition. The seized material will be subject to expert analysis to identify other members of the gang and further the investigation.

The dismantling of the gang specialized in the winning ticket scam represents an important step forward in the fight against this type of crime in the Serra Gaúcha region, according to delegate Fernanda Aranha, head of the São Francisco de Paula Police Station, and delegate Luciano Righes, head of the Caxias do Sul Police Station, who highlighted the importance of paying attention to this type of scam, generally practiced against elderly people.
