Operation Shield: the number of people killed in police action in Baixada Santista rises to 27

The death toll during the “Escudo” police operation in Baixada Santista reached 27 over the weekend, confirmed the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) of São Paulo, this Monday (4).

“To date, 27 people have died as a result of opposition to police intervention. By determination of the SSP, all cases of death resulting from police intervention are thoroughly investigated by the DEIC of Santos and by the Military Police through a Military Police Inquiry,” the SSP said in a note.

A CNN the delegate of the district headquarters of Guarujá, Antônio Sucupira, said that two men died during clashes with the police this weekend.

The first death was recorded on Saturday (2). According to the delegate, a man died when he reacted to gunshots to a PM approach, on Rua da Serra, in the Vila Júlia community.

He would be walking armed when the team that carries out patrolling in the region spotted him. With that, the suspect would have pulled a gun and shot at the agents, who reacted. Shot, the man couldn’t resist and died at the scene.

The delegate claims that he carried a bag with drugs, money and a pistol.

The second death happened on Sunday (3). According to Sucupira, a 37-year-old man died in a confrontation with the PM, in the Maré Mansa community, in Guarujá.

Police officers carried out patrolling in the region and suspected the man who was standing in front of a residence. Upon seeing the agents, the man ran into the house and allegedly fired in the direction of the PMs, who reacted.

He was rescued, but he couldn’t resist. The police seized a .38 caliber revolver.

National Human Rights Council recommends end of Operation Escudo in SP

Preliminary report by the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH), released on Friday (1st), recommended that the government of São Paulo “immediately interrupt” Operation Escudo, launched after the murder of Rota soldier Patrick Reis, in Guarujá, in the end of July.

The document also advocates “thorough investigation”, both of the death of the military police officer.

The council instituted an emergency delegation to monitor the repercussions of the PM’s death, who was part of Rota, and Operation Shield, initiated by the Public Security Secretariat of São Paulo in response to the soldier’s murder.

The mission also has the support of other institutions, such as the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), the São Paulo State Police Ombudsman and the Public Defender’s Office, among others.
