If in 2020 in Geraci the opposition to organ donation was close to 58%, after the death of Marta those against fell to 4.6% and abstentions to 10.7%. The small town, with 1,800 inhabitants, in a few months has become the most altruistic in Italy when it comes to organ donation.
The “gift index” of Geraci Siculo is the highest in Italy91.84 out of 100, followed – as regards the small municipalities – by that of Longano, in the province of Isernia, and by that of Cardedu, in the Nuorese area.
The ranking was drawn up by National Transplant Center on the most virtuous Municipalities in the collection of declarations of willingness to donate expressed in the registry office last year (in 2021) at the time of issue of the electronic identity card, in the 6854 Italian Municipalities where the service is active. The index keeps track of the percentage of consensusthat of abstentions and the number of documents issued.
Of all the great Italian citieswith more than 100,000 inhabitants, Trento is the one with the highest index (70.26 out of 100), up two positions compared to the last survey. That is to say that, in the last year, 8,961 of its citizens of age have registered their intentions on the eventual donation of organs. 7,199 (80.3%) said yes, while 36.7% abstained. In second position, among the largest cities, is Verona (the index is 69.11 out of 100): it has a higher consent rate (85.7%), but also a higher percentage of abstentions (50 , 1%). In third place is Livorno, followed by Ferrara, Cagliari, Sassari (which last year was at the top), Padua, Vicenza, Perugia and Florence.
In addition to Geraci Siculo and Trento, the index indicates two other “capitals” of organ donation: among the medium-large municipalities (between 30 and 100 thousand inhabitants), Nuoro is in first place, with an index of 74.21 / 100 and a consent rate for donation of 84.1%, followed by Belluno and Como. Then come Cerveteri, in the province of Rome, Camaiore (LU), Formia (LT), Sesto Fiorentino (FI), Alghero (SS), Pomigliano d’Arco (NA) and Castelfranco Veneto (TV). Among the small to medium-sized municipalities (between 5 and 30 thousand inhabitants), however, for the second year in a row in first place Primiero San Martino di Castrozza square is located, in the province of Trento, with an index of 84.42 and a consensus rate of 88.9%. Followed by Guardiagrele (CH), Livigno (BZ), Vernio (PO), Boscoreale (NA), Lanusei (NU), Oliena (NU), Corleone (PA), Altopiano della Vigolana (TN) and Leverano (LE).
In 2021, consensus rose to 68.9%, three points more than the previous year, with an average gift index of 59.23 / 100 (compared to the previous 52.86): it is the highest percentage ever collected, in a year, since registration took place in the registries. To date, the declarations of will filed in the Transplant Information System of the National Transplant Center are 12.7 million: 9.2 million yes and 3.5 million no. At the moment there are about 8,500 people on the waiting list: in 2021 3,778 transplants were carried out thanks to 1,725 ​​donors organs.
