Water contamination, garbage and high temperatures are causing a rise in skin diseases in the Gaza Strip.
With displaced families seeking shelter in overcrowded schools and a lack of clean water, children and adults alike are showing signs of illnesses that doctors say are nearly impossible to treat due to a shortage of medical supplies.
“We will face a major disaster if major organizations and the World Health Organization do not intervene,” Dr. Wissam Al-Sakani, spokesman for Kamal Adwan Hospital, told Reuters, adding that sewage water was contributing to the spread of several diseases including polio.
Gaza’s Health Ministry declared a polio epidemic in the Palestinian enclave last month, blaming Israel’s ongoing military offensive.
While no clinical cases have been found so far, polio has been detected in sewage in Gaza’s Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis provinces, the WHO said, adding that Gaza has recorded 70,000 cases of the rash as a result of overcrowding, sewage overflows and contaminated water.
