Pamela’s tale: nurse and boxer, now Italian champion

It seems like a fairy tale the story of Pamela Malvina Noutcho Sawa, born in Cameroon 28 years ago, in Italy since she was 8 and now Italian boxing champion. However, her job is another, she is not a boxing professional, but a nurse: she works in the emergency room of the Ospedale Maggiore in Bologna.

Sunday he conquered the title at the Italian Elite Boxing Championships, in the 64 kg category. A success, she said, achieved with commitment “dedication, determination and a lot of training”.

From Cameroon she came to Perugia with his family when he was 8 years old. She moved to Bologna at the age of 18 for university. He worked in the hospital first in Sassuolo and then in Bologna. According to what he said all’Ansa she came to boxing through «by chance, in 2015, during an internship at the Beltrame center which welcomes homeless people. There is also a gym available. They had organized a boxing course: they invited me to try and I never stopped ».

He is part of the Bolognina Boxe amateur sports association and during the lockdown he continued training remotely while continuing his work in the hospital. “To be a nurse and boxing you need the same things: concentration, courage and being ready to face a different opponent every time, finding solutions to make the patient feel better or win a match. My dream? I always joke about it with my coach: arriving in Las Vegas and fighting in the ring where the great champions challenged each other ».

For her only compliments from the local councilors of the Order of Nurses. “Young people represent the future and Pamela, a 28-year-old nurse, is an example. We are proud of his tenacity which represents value both in the ring and in the hospital wards, ”he told al Corriere della Sera Pietro Giurdanella, president of the Order of Bologna. “We have seen this in particular during this pandemic which has seen nurses and doctors fight to the last breath to save many lives.”
