One of the advantages that Paola Barale it has always been recognized is punctuality. In fact, for this interview, she herself telephones me three minutes earlier than the agreed time: “It is said that women are late, but the truth is that I find it rude to delay an appointment”, says Barale from her Milan house, ready to face the 49th rerun of If you have to tell a lie, say it big, the historic show by the Dorelli firm, Quattrini, Guida that Paola staged from 29 March to 10 April at Manzoni Theater in Milan and which will continue with new dates around Italy. Her role is that of her lover Susanna Rolandi, played in the past by Anna Falchi and Gloria Guida.
Together with Antonio Catania, Gianluca Ramazzotti and Paola Quattrini – returned for the third time to play the role of the Honorable’s wife, Natalia – Paola Barale understands what many TV artists struggle to accept, namely that television is not the only framework within which a professional can express herself and that it is also nice to experiment with new languages and embark on new challenges. Although, during the interview, Paola Barale will tell me that she never gave up on television, and that she hopes that sooner or later the right project will arrive, in line with her spirit and her strings. The same ones that made her a timeless icon of the small screen in the golden years and that younger generations have discovered thanks to her goodies such as her participation in Beijing Express six years ago.
How’s your adrenaline going before you get on stage?
“In the 30 seconds before entering, the heart beats very fast. Then, as soon as I knock on the door, it passes me. I put on the wig, the jacket and become Susanna: Paola is gone. It took some time to do it, not to mention that the beauty of the theater is that every night is different ».
Theater, unlike television and cinema, is not permanent: it lives in the instant it is consumed. Is it a prospect that fascinates you?
«You always experience the show in a different way. It’s nice to go back to the theater, especially in a period in which cinema is also suffering since, in the last two years, we have become accustomed to seeing Netflix at home ».
In an interview with Courier she said that, for this show, “they hired me because I’m a calling name, not because I’m good.” Doesn’t she seem too severe a judgment on herself?
«But no, I don’t think they called me for my acting skills: the director has always taken the right name to call back, even if it was certainly not so automatic: I auditioned, I talked to the producer. I’ve never done this kind of theater, and I didn’t want to disappoint the people who gave me this chance. Then I’ve been trying to act for years, the goal was to do it well. I give it my all, I guarantee my commitment and a little less on the result ».
How’s it going with the self-criticism for this role?
“It seems to me that it is going well. Beyond the joy of being on stage with actors who have been attending theaters for 70 years, I think it also takes a lot of courage to expose yourself. I hold a bang ».
Yet in the past she has also worked with Sergio Rubini: she was a bit skilled.
“A slightly wasted opportunity, that one.”
