Paola Turci and Francesca Pascale are now married: but in Italy there is no egalitarian marriage

Today 2 July, while Pride is being celebrated in Milan, Paola Turci and Francesca Pascale they get married in Montalcino with a very restricted ceremony at the Castello di Velona. An exclusive location for a love born in the shadow of the spotlight two years ago and that the couple protected and kept tried as much as possible until the announcement of the wedding a few days ago. We write “marriage” because the Italian language knows how to be more inclusive than the law of our country which, even today, does not actually provide for marriage between people of the same sex. The one between Paola Turci and Francesca Pascale will in fact be a ‘civil union.

A distinction that in no way changes the love between these two women but instead limits them from a legal point of view: in fact, the civil union provides for patrimonial rights but in no way those that have to do with parenthood. For example, if Paola and Francesca wanted to become mothers together they would be forced to go to a judge to both enjoy the recognition of parents. Likewise, they cannot adopt, because in Italy adoption is only foreseen for heterosexual couples united in marriage.

Furthermore, the civil union, in which the obligation of fidelity foreseen by marriage is lacking, does not provide for publications and can only be celebrated in front of the Civil Status Officer and two witnesses. One lack is that of egalitarian marriage which in Western Europe has remained only Italian. In other countries, same-sex couples can marry just like everyone else.

The sense (or nonsense) of all this has exposed it very well Vladimir Luxuria in an interview with Republic. «Congratulations to Francesca Pascale and Paola Turci: I would like to say that they are getting married, in reality they are uniting because in Italy there are civil unions and not yet egalitarian marriage. Beyond everything, love always triumphs because whoever is himself has already won “. When is the recognition of egalitarian marriage a law against homophobia?
