The Paris prosecutor’s office said on Tuesday (9) that it had launched a preliminary investigation into suspicions of illegal financing of the campaign of far-right National Rally (RN) leader Marine Le Pen for the 2022 presidential race, which she lost to Emmanuel Macron.
The investigation, opened on July 2, follows a 2023 report by the National Commission for Campaign Accounts and Political Financing (CNCCFP), which examines candidates’ electoral expenses and financing, the Public Ministry said.
The investigation will look into allegations of embezzlement, forgery, fraud and that a candidate in an election campaign accepted a loan.
Le Pen and her party have previously denied any wrongdoing related to campaign financing. The National Rally could not immediately be reached for comment.
