Partnership between UN and Rio de Janeiro designs resilient cities against change

The mountainous region of Rio suffered from heavy rains in 2011, with more than 900 deaths, leaving residents traumatized. So that tragedies like this do not happen again, the government of Rio de Janeiro and the UN promote partnerships for resilient cities against climate change.

In recent years, different regions of the state have suffered from storms, floods and landslides. The program aims to transform and raise awareness among the population about the importance of the environmental agenda .

“There is no point in talking about changing the planet without changing our home and when we talk about changing our home it means changing our cultural issue. There’s no point in just paying it to public authorities”, says Bernardo Rossi, Secretary of Environment and Sustainability of Rio de Janeiro

Surrounded by mountains and slopes, the Riograndina district, in Nova Friburgo, was one of the most affected by floods and landslides.

Years later, with one of the biggest environmental disasters in Brazil, the vegetation has not yet completely recovered there. .

So that those scenes do not happen again, the state government signed an unprecedented partnership in the country with UN-Habitat, a United Nations program for the promotion of socially and environmentally sustainable cities.

“We will work with society to prepare them how to react, where to go, what to do in the event of an extreme event”, says Ana Asti, Undersecretary of Sustainability of Rio de Janeiro

In the “Rio Inclusivo e Sustentável” project, technicians from the organization provide guidance for the 92 municipalities in Rio de Janeiro to develop solutions to face the consequences of climate change. Community awareness and mobilization are also priorities.

In addition to Nova Friburgo, other cities in the mountainous region, Costa Verde and Baixada Fluminense, considered more vulnerable, receive special attention.
