The rumor of a new power connector for next-generation graphics cards has been confirmed. Presumably, the first such connector will receive the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti video card, which is expected to be released in January next year.

The PCIe Gen5 auxiliary power connector will address one of the biggest drawbacks of the current 8-pin power connector – the lack of power it can provide. The power threshold will rise from 150W to 600W.
The connector has 16 lines (12 power lines and 4 signal lines). Structurally, it differs from the MicroFit Molex. In particular, the contact pitch has been reduced from 4.2 mm to 3.0 mm. The largest connector size is 18.85 mm, which is noticeably less than two and even more so three current 8-pin connectors.

The PCI-SIG specification specifies 9.2 A for each pin for a total of 55.2 A. At 12 V, the maximum power is 662 W, but the specification is lower at 600 W. The purpose of the signal lines is still unknown.
Several manufacturers are already making these connectors. For example, Amphenol offers the “Minitek Pwr Gen 5 PCIe Connector System.” The CEM 5.0 PCI Express 12VHPWR “auxiliary hybrid connector and cable assembly” description says they support 600W graphics cards. It also clarifies that the 12VHPWR connector is not compatible with previous generation PCIe auxiliary power connectors.
