Pensions in the year of Covid-19: almost 65,000 fewer pensions and a monthly payroll that already exceeds 10,000 million

The publication of the pension payroll for January 1 leaves two historical figures. On the one hand, that between January and December 2020 the system registered about 65,000 more casualties than last year as a direct consequence of the coronavirus pandemic. And on the other, that the monthly expense that the system supports already exceeds 10,000 million euros.

According to the Ministry of Social Security, “from January to December 2020 517,924 pensions have dropped, 14.3% more than the previous year,” a figure that shows that difference of, specifically, 64,797 fewer pensions. In addition, the number of registrations has also been reduced: 5% less, which represents a reduction of 27,992 in the number of registrations.

This reduction as a consequence of the deaths caused by the pandemic, and also the processing problems due to the saturation of public services, already began to be verified in May and has been a constant in recent months. The very department headed by Josà © Luis Escrivá has recognized this, and with this evolution the total number of contributory pensions paid as of January 1 is 9,811,124 benefits. “6,130,604 are for retirement, 2,349,865 for widowhood, 949,193 for permanent disability, 338,414 for orphan and 43,048 for family members,” explains Social Security.

10 billion a month

With regard to spending, “the monthly payroll of contributory Social Security benefits amounted to 10,087.70 million euros as of January 1, 3.26% more than a year ago “, explains the Ministry. It is, obviously, the highest figure in history and one of the most important expenses not only in the system of Social Security but the State as a whole. This figure has also suffered the impact of the coronavirus, since for some months it even decreased and it was finally in this month of January when it reached that significant figure of 10 billion.

In the last rebound, the fact that the January payroll “includes revaluation of 0.9% foreseen in the General State Budgets for 2021 “, that is, the increase that the Government decreed for pensions. The average pension of the system” stood at 1,028.19 euros “, while” the average retirement pension was 1,182 .7 euros, 3.27% more than last year “.
