Pentagon says Chinese jet performed ‘aggressive’ maneuver near US military plane

US officials said a Chinese fighter jet performed an “unnecessarily aggressive” maneuver near a US military plane on Tuesday. The incident, according to the Pentagon, took place in international airspace over the South China Sea.

The US military command responsible for the Indo-Pacific region said in a statement that the Chinese J-16 aircraft performed the maneuver last week and forced the US RC-135 plane to fly into turbulence.

“The US will continue to fly, sail and operate – safely and responsibly – wherever international law allows,” he said.

Video showed a fighter jet passing in front of the US plane’s nose, and the RC-135’s cabin swaying in the turbulence.

The Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the past, China has said that the US sending ships and planes to the South China Sea was not good for peace.

Actions like this happen occasionally. In December, a Chinese military plane came within three meters of a US Air Force aircraft and forced it to take evasive maneuvers to avoid a collision in international airspace.
