The multinational Pepsico will launch a project at the company’s plant in à ?? lava to package in one hundred percent recycled plastic bottles. The multinational will thus become the first to have a totally sustainable container in the carbonated beverage market, according to the company officials today.
As detailed today Narcis Roura, Managing Director of Pepsico for Southwest Europe, on this project, which will be launched in the summer of 2021, two million euros will be invested up front, in a commitment to “sustainability” and the “circularity of evases”.
Along with this project, the company also will remove the plastic from the can packs by mocking it for another cardboard, with an investment of three million euros.
In this way, the company accelerates the sustainability plan that originally foresaw that 45% of all packaging would be recycled plastic by 2025. Already this year, this percentage had been exceeded, by using packaging with a 50% recycled plastic. Now the final push is given to the sustainability plan by going 100%.
The fact that the multinational is going to start this sustainable process in the Alava factory of Etxebarri, is also a boost to this plant, which celebrates its 45th anniversary this year, since it was born in 1975 as Kas to become the property of Pepsi in 1992. The multinational has invested in this plant this year
14 million euros. From à ?? lava s it markets, in addition to the different varieties of Pepsi, Kas and Seven up, and employs 190 people directly and 500 indirectly.
Roura did not want to give details about the sales this year or the forecasts for 2021, although he recognized the difficulties taking into account that its billing is closely linked to the hotel business and tourism. In this sense, it has hoped to recover in 2021 the levels of 2019.
Globally, PepsiCo earned $ 2,984 million in the first six months of 2020, representing a decrease of 13.4% compared to the same period of the previous year due to the impact of the pandemic.
