The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, asked parliamentarians on Sunday (29) to reconsider the proposal to bring elections forward to the end of this year, and promised that she will propose a constitutional reform to change the general elections to October if parliamentarians do not do.
The parliamentarians would continue the debate this Monday (30), after rejecting a motion last week that would open the doors to the holding of elections this year.
Friday’s vote dismayed the president, who has come under increasing pressure as protests across the country call for her resignation.
In a speech to the nation, Boluarte also said that if Congress does not reconsider the proposal to hold elections, she will present a bill to instruct the next elected Congress to oversee a “total reform” of Peru’s Constitution, which dates from 1993.
The reformed constitution would be submitted to a referendum, Boluarte said.
Popular dissatisfaction increased after a protester died in Lima on Saturday night, the first victim in the country’s capital since protests began in December.
The total death toll in the nationwide protests has reached 58, according to Peru’s ombudsman, who on Sunday issued a statement urging authorities to end the violence.
“The most morally repulsive course of action is to let people die when you have the political power in your hands to bring peace and change today’s tragic direction,” the statement said.
