Petrobras returns to the spotlight with election to the board of directors

Petrobras returns to the spotlight this Friday (19), as the shareholders’ meeting to approve the state-owned company’s new Board of Directors takes place in the early afternoon.

The meeting is expected to be noisy: minority shareholders have not welcomed the government’s insistence on nominating names that were vetoed by the Petrobras Eligibility Committee due to conflict of interest.

These are Jonathas Assunção de Castro, number 2 of the Ministry of the Civil House, and Ricardo Soriano de Alencar, Attorney General of the Treasury. The government argues that the positions that both names occupy are not vetoed by the Corporate Law, which restricts, for example, the election of ministers to the Council.

For many experts, on the other hand, the insistence reveals an attempt at political interference in Petrobras.

Looking ahead to the opening of markets on Friday, US futures and European stocks started the day lower, as they digest statements from Fed officials made last Thursday and economic data from Germany, the biggest economy in the euro bloc.
