PF carries out operation against suspects of causing a wall of fire in the Pantanal

The Federal Police carried out an operation to combat crimes of fire, deforestation, illegal exploitation of Union lands and criminal association in the Corumbá region, in the interior of Mato Grosso do Sul, this Thursday morning (10).

Federal police officers carry out three search and seizure warrants during Operation “Arraial São João” against suspects of causing an arson attack in the Pantanal region.

In June, the fire had repercussions throughout Brazil because of images showing the São João de Corumbá festivities being held with a wall of fire in the background of the party, on the border with Bolivia.

During the investigations, the data collected revealed that the devastated area is a frequent target of this environmental crime and, subsequently, also the target of land grabbing by committing fraud against government agencies.

According to the PF, there is still evidence of irregular cattle management from Bolivia in the devastated area.

Federal Police expertise identified that approximately 30,000 hectares of the Pantanal biome were burned by those investigated.

In June, the CNN showed that a crisis office was set up in Mato Grosso do Sul to investigate the fires in the Pantanal.

The targets of the operationv may respond, to the extent of their responsibilities, for the crimes of causing fires in forests, deforestation and economic exploitation of public domain areas, ideological falsehood, land grabbing and criminal association.
