The intelligence sector of the Federal Police (PF) monitors the situation on the Brazilian border amid increased tension between Venezuela and Guyana.
Venezuelans participated, this Sunday (3), in a referendum and approved measures that could result in the annexation of part of Guyana’s territory.
The monitoring carried out by the PF will supply the government with intelligence reports and can support any decisions made by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
Lula asked, this weekend, for “common sense” from both countries amid the dispute over Essequibo, a region that is equivalent to 70% of the current Guyanese territory.
“What South America doesn’t need is confusion,” Lula told journalists this Sunday on his last day at COP28, in Dubai.
Lula defended dialogue and said he did not believe that a direct confrontation should take place between the two countries.
The Army increased the number of personnel in the Pacaraima Special Border Platoon (RR) from 70 to 130 to reinforce patrolling on the border between Brazil and Venezuela.
The government wants to prevent Venezuela from using Brazilian territory to advance into Guyana.
