PM investigates police officers who sang song extolling Carandiru Massacre; watch video

The Military Police are investigating officers who were filmed singing a song that glorifies the Carandiru Massacre, in the Riot Police Center building, in downtown São Paulo.

A video shows an agent singing the song. He is surrounded by other soldiers, who smile as they repeat the lyrics. Watch :

The lyrics say: “there was only trash, only scum, in the moral; a ‘hot lead’ was given to bring everyone down; bombs, stabbings, shots and grenades; stretched out bodies and torn off heads; the scene is a war, like Vietnam; my salute, Colonel Ubiratan; cheers thief, your time will come”.

The Carandiru Massacre occurred on October 2, 1992, when 111 prisoners died after a riot in pavilion 9 of the São Paulo Detention Center.

In total, 74 military police officers were indicted and convicted by a jury with sentences ranging from 48 to 632 years in prison.

Colonel Ubiratan Guimarães, mentioned in the song, commanded the PM operation at the Carandiru Penitentiary. At trial in 2001, he was sentenced to 632 years in prison for the deaths of 102 of the 111 prisoners.

In 2002, he was elected state deputy in São Paulo with 56 thousand votes. The colonel died in 2006 after suffering a gunshot wound to the torso.

The Military Police reported in a statement that the Riot Police Command is investigating the case. The corporation states that “the conduct of the police officers who appear in the images does not correspond to the practices of the Institution and appropriate measures will be taken”.

A CNN He also heard from Cláudio Aparecido da Silva, ombudsman for the São Paulo police, who said that he had contacted the PM’s Internal Affairs Department asking for an investigation and accountability for the facts.

The Ombudsman received an anonymous complaint about the video last Thursday (4).

“The Carandiru event is part of a past that we are not proud of. Celebrating it or anything like that is shameful, to say the least,” the ombudsman added.
