Podcast: Right to self-defense has limits, says former ICC judge about Israel

In an exclusive interview with the podcast, the Brazilian who was part of the first panel of judges at the International Criminal Court (ICC), Sylvia Steiner, claims to see war crimes being committed by both Israel and Hamas.

Steiner served on the court between 2003 and 2012. The ICC, based in The Hague, Netherlands, tries individuals when national authorities are unable or unwilling to prosecute. States and organizations, in turn, are judged by the International Court of Justice.

In conversation with Camila Olivo, the former judge assesses that “every State has the right to self-defense, but with certain limits. She [autodefesa] cannot involve excesses that end up affecting people who were not involved in the aggression.”

Steiner tells the podcast that the order to move the Palestinian population from the north to the south of the Gaza Strip, determined by the Israeli Defense Forces, in addition to being a war crime, is also a crime against humanity.
