Poland: President vetoes the release of the contraceptive pill

Poland's conservative President Andrzej Duda today vetoed legislation aimed at freeing up access to the morning-after pill, which is currently only available by prescription in Poland, the presidency announced. In Poland, women's reproductive rights have been pushed back during the eight years of rule by the nationalist populist Law and Justice (PiS) party, as access to emergency contraception has been made available only by prescription since 2017. Duda decided to “refer to the Parliament the amendment of the law on pharmaceutical products asking it to reconsider the law (veto)”, according to the announcement of the presidency. The pro-European coalition, which has ruled Poland since December, had adopted a bill aimed at allowing access to the morning-after pill from the age of 15.
