Police are called after residents confuse Yoga class with mass murder in the UK

When yoga teacher Millie Laws turned off the lights at the end of one of her classes at a small studio in the United Kingdom this week, she expected her students to have a moment of relaxation — but what actually happened was something completely unusual.

Shortly after the class ended, the noise of several sirens and police officers running towards the studio scared everyone in the place.

The agents were responding to a call made by a resident of the region. Upon seeing people lying on the floor, he believed that there might have been a mass murder in the studio, and decided to call the authorities.

Laws runs the Unity Yoga school and teaches at the North Sea Observatory in the village of Chapel St. Leonards. There is also a community space and an art gallery on site.

Employees at a cafe inside the observatory spoke about the misunderstanding in a post on social media.

“If anyone heard the large number of police sirens at Chapel St Leonard at 9:30pm last night, rest assured,” they wrote.

“They were on their way to the Observatory after someone reported a mass murder in our building, having seen several people lying on the floor… Which turned out to be yoga students in meditation,” they added.

“Please note that the Observatory has many Yoga classes at night. We are not part of any cult or crazy club,” the post continued.

On the Unity Yoga Facebook page, Laws said that the police were called after some local dog walkers “confused the scene with a ritual mass murder”.

In a telephone interview with CNN this Friday (8), Laws said that five police cars appeared at the scene shortly after she and the seven students participating in the class left the studio.

She says she was informed about the episode by a phone call from the local manager.

“I was very shocked,” she said. “It was so surreal and I didn’t believe it was true,” she said.

“I spoke to most of the people in the class and they all said this was crazy […] They were all participating in a beautiful deep relaxation and it could never have crossed anyone’s mind that it could be interpreted that way,” he added.

Police confirmed the incident in a statement emailed to CNN also this Friday (7).

“A call was made due to concerns from occupants of the North Sea Observatory at Chapel St Leonards. Police officers were at the scene. We are happy to report that everyone was safe and well. The call was made with good intentions,” said the note.
