Police case and dangerous area, says Mourão about missing people in the Amazon

In an interview with the press this Monday (13), Vice President Hamilton Mourão spoke about the disappearance of the indigenist Bruno Araújo Pereira and the English journalist Dom Phillips in the Amazon.

“It’s a police case, an inhospitable region, far from everything, on the border with Peru, on Peru’s side a series of illegalities happen, and on our side as well. The two people enter an area that is dangerous without asking for an escort, without effectively notifying the competent authorities and they are at risk, unfortunately that’s it,” said Mourão.

The vice president also stated that he awaits the resolution of the case. “Let’s hope they are alive and have simply been imprisoned, whatever it is, or managed to evade the people who were trying to do some harm to them and are wandering through the jungle.”

Material found belongs to the duo, says PF

The Federal Police (PF) confirmed that the material found this Sunday (12) in the Amazon belongs to the indigenist and the English journalist, who disappeared on the 5th while traveling between the Ribeirinha São Rafael community to the municipality of Atalaia do Norte, in the Amazon.

According to a note sent by the corporation, a health card, pants, flip-flops and a pair of boots belonging to Araújo were found; and a pair of boots and a backpack with clothes from Dom Phillips.

According to the crisis committee set up by the Federal Police, the searches this Sunday focused on the region of the Itaquaí River, “especially in the area where another vessel was found, apparently owned by Amarildo da Costa Oliveira, who is currently under temporary arrest on account of of the facts”.
