The São Paulo Civil Police confirmed, this Sunday morning (10), that a ruptured gas pipe was found next to the room of billionaire José Bezerra de Menezes Neto, in Guarujá, on the coast of São Paulo.
Binho Bezerra, as he was known, was found dead alongside his wife, Luciana Bezerra, in a condominium in the coastal city. A dog was also found dead at the scene.
Binho was ranked 205th on the list of billionaires in Forbes magazine, released at the end of 2022. At the time, his assets were valued at R$1.5 billion.
He was part of the third generation of controllers of BicBanco, founded in 1938, in the city of Juazeiro do Norte, in Ceará, by his father, the former federal deputy and former deputy governor of the state, Humberto Bezerra, and by his uncle, the also former governor of Ceará Adauto Bezerra.
In 2013, the project was sold to China Construction Bank for R$1.62 billion. Currently, the institution is called CCB Brasil.
The case
The couple’s son called the Military Police after the incident. Authorities preserved the site. Forensics and the homicide team from the Specialized Criminal Investigations Division (Deic) of Santos attended the scene to carry out the necessary measures.
The main line of investigation, according to the delegate, is death due to gas poisoning, used to heat the pool and water in the residence. Investigators who were at the condominium reported that there were no signs of violence on the bodies, no blood throughout the house or signs that there had been a fight.
Antonio Sucupira noted, however, that no hypothesis about the deaths can be ruled out.
Experts from the Santos Institute of Criminalistics were called in and will have the assistance of São Paulo’s criminal forensics and engineering department in preparing the autopsy reports, which should be completed by the end of September.
The police also requested images from the development’s security cameras from the Iporanga condominium.
The governor of Ceará, Elmano de Freitas (PT), lamented the case on social media.
“I received, with great sadness, the news of the death of Ceará businessman Binho Bezerra and his wife Luciana. Binho presided over Banco BIC, which was founded by his father, Humberto Bezerra and his uncle, former governor Adauto Bezerra. May God comfort the hearts of friends and family”, said Elmano.
