Police try to find cause of death of three Americans at Bahamas resort

Three Americans died of unknown causes on Friday (6) at the Sandals resort on Great Exuma Island, in Bahamas and police are investigating the case, officials said.

Two men and a woman died at the resort, and a fourth American was airlifted to a hospital in Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, Bahamas acting Prime Minister Chester Cooper said on Friday.

Although police are investigating, Cooper has been “advised that there is no suspicion of foul play,” he said. No signs of trauma were found on the bodies, the Royal Bahamas Police Force said in a statement to CNN .

Preliminary reports indicate that the bodies were found unresponsive in two different locations. A man was found first in a village with no signs of trauma, and the couple in a second village, police said in a statement released on Saturday. The couple had complained of pain the night before, according to the report.

“Officers found a Caucasian male slumped against a bathroom wall, unresponsive,” the Royal Bahamas Police Force said. “The woman didn’t respond either. Both subjects showed signs of seizure. Officers examined the bodies and found no signs of trauma.”

THE police will wait for an autopsy report to determine the exact cause of death, adding that for now “this matter remains under active investigation”.
Cooper did not name the resort, but Sandals Resorts spokeswoman Stacy Royal confirmed to CNN the death of the three guests.

Sandals Resorts, operator of more than a dozen all-inclusive centers in Atlantic and not caribbean , did not mention a fourth person hospitalized. Details about what led to the deaths, why the fourth American was taken to hospital, whether that person was at the resort, her condition and the names of the victims were not released.

“A health emergency was initially reported and, following our protocols, we immediately alerted emergency medical professionals and relevant local authorities,” Sandals Resorts said in a statement to CNN on Saturday morning (7).

The company said it is working to “support both the investigation and the guest families in every way possible” but cannot release further information “out of respect for the privacy of our guests”.

Cooper asked the Nation’s Minister of Health and Welfare to lead a delegation of health, environment and public works officials to the Exuma district on Friday.

“The public will be kept abreast of the information as it becomes available,” said Cooper, who is also the Bahamas Minister of Tourism. “We offer our thoughts and prayers to the affected families.”
