The centrist party “Azione”, Action, finally decided to leave the center-left “Democratic Party” of Enrico Letta.
“We cannot ally indirectly with forces that describe themselves as having a communist ideology,” said Azione head Carlo Calenda. The reason for this “divorce” is the decision of the “Democrats” to enter into a pre-election alliance with the Greens and also with the Italian Left, which on many issues has positions diametrically opposed to those of Azione’s liberals.
Based on the new data, therefore, in the polls for the intention to vote, the center-left and the remaining allies gather 27%. The center-right of the League and “Forza Italia” and the far-right of “Brothers of Italy” continue to be “favorites”, with 43%. Now, a new player emerges in this electoral contest.
The post-election scenarios
If Azione decides to ally with former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s small, moderate party Live Italy, pollsters predict around 10% of Italians could vote for them. And to effectively create a third pole, which could prove to be of decisive importance for the composition of the new government.
Amidst all this, analysts are also waiting to see what the Five Star Movement will decide to do: whether Giuseppe Conte, who is in its leadership, will march towards the elections independently or make a last-minute attempt to join forces with the center left.
As for the post-election scenarios, Matteo Salvini, from the League, does not hide that he would like to become minister of the interior again, to deal with immigration. But the far-right Georgia Meloni “put ice on him” and made it clear that all this will be discussed and decided only after the elections. The League Secretary got the message, and backed off.
