The majority of the Turkish population believes that neither the opposition nor the People’s Alliance are ready to rule the country, according to a new poll by the Turkish polling company Metropoll.
47% of respondents said no to the question of whether the Alliance or opposition parties are ready to rule Turkey, the news website Gerçek Gündem reported on Saturday.
Those who do not believe in the opposition are one percentage point higher, at 46%, compared to those who maintain their support, according to the survey.
The inquiry comes 18 months before the next elections in Turkey, where the government is trying to control the worst economic crisis in the country under the nearly 20-year rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The spike in inflation and the fall of the pound have dealt a blow to the popularity of Erdogan and his government, and undecided voters are likely to play a crucial role in the next parliamentary and presidential elections scheduled for 2023, according to analysts.
The ruling People’s Alliance of Turkey won a total of 54% of the vote in 2018, compared to 34% of the Alliance of the Nation consisting of the nationalist Good Party, the secular Republican People’s Party and the Islamocentric Happiness Party.
At present, six parties are expected to form the opposition Nation Alliance in the run-up to the next elections and have not yet announced which candidate they will field against Erdogan in the next ballot box.
