Polygreen has managed to make Tilos the first island in the world to achieve 100% diversion from landfill. How; Through a comprehensive waste management program that has been developed by the company and includes door-to-door waste collection and their full utilization. This waste concerns a total of 25 flows: Plastics, packaging paper, printed paper, aluminum, four-pack, metal containers, cigarette butts, coffee capsules, cooking oil, spray, lamps, glass, toner, batteries, PP caps, drug packaging, styrofoam, , electrical appliances, organic, non-recyclable, diapers, reusable items and wooden packaging).
With the correct sorting of waste at the source being a prerequisite for the success of the project, more than 500 special bags have been distributed to every household and business in Tilos. Through them, the separated door-to-door waste is collected on predetermined days and intensified during the summer period, when the number of visitors to the island increases drastically.
The waste is then transported to the Cyclic Innovation Center which replaced the landfill and was equipped with modern machinery and technological applications. There is further sorting and preparation of waste for recycling, composting or energy recovery.
