The appointment of Petrini, who holds a degree from LUISS, a prestigious Italian University of Economics, marks the Pope’s recent effort to promise to improve the gender balance she gave years ago, which, however, according to women’s organizations is being implemented very slowly.

According to the online newspaper National Catholic Reporter, this position is traditionally occupied bishop.

It is noted that in February, the Pope appointed a woman as Undersecretary of the Session of bishops, the first to occupy this position with the right to vote in a body that studies the major issues of the doctrine.

Further, in 2016 the Pope had set up a committee tasked with examining their history Deacon women in the early years of the Catholic Church, in an approach that could potentially lead to the inclusion of women in this role today.

The committee’s conclusions, however, were not expected to live up to expectations, and the pope appointed another body last year to look into the matter.

After all, Francis has said that he does not see the reason why a woman should not hold a top position other than those that for open dogmatic reasons only to ordained priests.
