Pope Francis lands in Indonesia and begins his trip to Asia

Pope Francis arrived in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, on Tuesday (3).

The flight carrying the 87-year-old pope and his entourage traveled overnight for 13 hours from Rome to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, located near the capital Jakarta. During the trip, the pontiff thanked the media outlets that accompanied him on what he called “the longest flight of my life.”

The pope will be in Indonesia until Friday (6). During his visit, he is expected to participate in an ecumenical celebration at a mosque, meet with President Joko Widodo and hold a mass at a stadium in Jakarta, among other activities.

He is then due to visit Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste and Singapore before returning to Rome on September 13.
