From this Friday (14), all items offered The Popular Pharmacy Program are distributed free of charge in accredited establishments. The announcement was made this week by the Ministry of Health. The estimate of the portfolio is that the measure immediately benefits more than 1 million people every year and, before, paid co -participation to have access to inputs and medicines.
With the expansion of the free list, geriatric diapers, for example, are provided for free to the eligible public, such as people 60 or older and individuals with reduced mobility, including bedridden patients or wheelchair users. Dapagliflozine, a drug used to treat diabetes associated with cardiovascular disease, will also be offered by the program without costs.
By July 2024, the Ministry had already announced an expansion to 95% of the total items offered by Free Distribution Pharmacy in accredited units. At the time, drugs to treat high cholesterol, Parkinson’s disease, glaucoma and rhinitis, for example, were removed for free. The calculation of the portfolio was that about 3 million people could benefit from the measure.

The popular pharmacy currently offers 41 items between drugs, diapers and absorbents. Initially, only drugs against diabetes, hypertension, asthma and osteoporosis, as well as contraceptives, were distributed free of charge. Unit accreditation
In addition to the expansion of gratuity, the ministry has announced a new phase of accreditation for private pharmacies located in municipalities that are not yet served by the program. The drugstore registration was resumed in 2023, after eight years without any new pharmacy included. “With the new qualifications, the expectation is the universalization of the popular pharmacy,” said the paw.
Ministry data indicate that, currently, the program can be found in accredited establishments out of a total of 4,812 Brazilian municipalities, covering 86% of cities and coverage of about 97% of the population through more than 31 thousand pharmacies.
According to the portfolio, to accredit an establishment to the Popular Pharmacy, it is necessary that it is located in a municipality with open vacancy and the owner of the unit meets the required documentation. The process includes the completion of forms and the presentation of the following authenticated or digital certification documents:
- proof of CNPJ with a specific national classification number (CNAE) (CNAE) (4771701 and 4771702);
- Registration with the Commercial Board or Digital Certification;
- State or Municipal Health License;
- Operation Authorization issued by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa);
- Fiscal regularity certificate with the IRS;
- Certificate of Technical Regularity issued by the Regional Pharmacy Council;
- Documentation of the legal representative and the responsible pharmacist;
- and proof of bank account of the company.
Removal of items
To obtain drugs and geriatric diapers by the popular pharmacy, the patient should attend an accredited establishment, identified by the program logo, presenting:
- Official document with photo and CPF number or identity document in which the CPF number includes;
- and revenue within the validity period of both the Unified Health System (SUS) and private services.
- For patients bedridden or unable to attend a program accredited to the program, a legal representative or prosecutor should seek the unit and present:
- Revenue within the expiration date, both SUS and private services;
- Official photo document and CPF of the Beneficiary Holder of the Revenue or Identity Document consisting of the CPF number, except under age, which allows the presentation of the Birth Certificate or General Registration (ID);
In the case of the legal representative, it is necessary:
- that the situation has been declared by court judgment;
- that he has a power of attorney that grants full powers or specific powers for the acquisition of medicines and/or geriatric diapers with the program;
- May it be a public power of attorney that grants full powers or specific powers for the acquisition of drugs and/or geriatric diaper with the program;
- May he be a particular power of attorney with a firm recognition, which gives full powers or specific powers for the acquisition of drugs and/or geriatric diapers with the program; and
- Finally, to obtain hygienic tampons by the popular pharmacy, the beneficiary person must attend an accredited establishment presenting:
- Official document with photo and CPF number or identity document in which the CPF number includes; and
- Authorization document of the menstrual dignity program, in digital or printed format, which must be generated via my digital SUS application or website, valid for 180 days.
