The fifth season episodes of “The Handmaid’s Tale” arrive on the streaming service Paramount+ this Sunday (18). The series, which premiered in 2017, stars actress Elizabeth Moss and has won several awards, including an Emmy.
The series is based on the book “The Handmaid’s Tale”, released in 1985 by renowned Canadian writer Margaret Atwood. But did the author at that time imagine that she would captivate so many fans around the world?
Fact is: when it was adapted on TV, the dystopian novel jumped to the top of the best-seller lists in bookstores and websites.
The plot about a society taken over by an authoritarian regime, which especially oppresses women, caused a commotion. But, at the same time, the story also bothered many people and suffered attempts at censorship.
Apparently, this doesn’t shake Margaret Atwood, who is a figure present in campaigns for freedom of expression, takes a political stance on social media and – most importantly – continues to write about topics that arouse pertinent discussions.
And today, at the age of 82, the Canadian writer sees her production gain more steam. In 2023, she will release another book: “Old Babes in the Wood” (still untitled in Portuguese).
In addition, another work by the author, “Colchão de Pedra”, will be adapted – now in cinema. Actresses Julianne Moore and Sandra Oh are already confirmed in the cast of the film, which has no set release date.
