Portugal: About 60 flights were canceled in Lisbon, another 12 in Spain due to the strikes

About 60 flights were canceled at Lisbon airport today, the final day of a strike by ground staff, according to figures from the national airport management agency ANA.

Workers at ground handling company Portway are calling for better holiday pay and career development opportunities. According to the ANA website, a total of 59 flights (31 arrivals and 28 departures) were canceled at Lisbon airport, the country’s largest, today.

A spokesman for the National Union of Civil Aviation Workers (SINTAC) said the three-day strike involved almost 90% of Portway’s ground staff at Lisbon and Porto airports. SINTAC expects a total of 70-80 flights from Lisbon and 30-40 from Porto to be canceled today.

In neighboring Spain, Iberia Express, the low-cost subsidiary of Iberia, today canceled eight domestic flights and EasyJet four international flights to Geneva and London.

Iberia Express cabin crew have called a 10-day strike, which will last until September 6, with wage demands. At EasyJet, the pilots are on strike for the third time in August, demanding that their working conditions be returned to the regime that existed before the pandemic and that negotiations for a new collective agreement resume.
