For the first time in history, the government of Colombia will be led by a left-wing president. Gustavo Petro defeated right-wing businessman Rodolfo Hernández in the second round of elections, last Sunday (19). The economist and former guerrilla was running for the post for the third time and was elected with promises of profound changes in the country.
A new economic system, universal health and education, agrarian reform and taxation of large fortunes are some of the points of the president-elect’s government program. But Petro will not have a majority in Congress and takes over the country at a time of high inflation, contraction of jobs and a scenario of popular unrest in the streets.
