Chinese President Xi Jinping today promised that his country would donate one billion doses of Covid-19 vaccine to Africa, either as a donation or through support for domestic production, to fill the “vaccine gap” on the continent.
The Chinese leader also announced dozens of investment and construction projects on the African continent, in the fields of health, digital economy, security, as well as the cancellation of the debt of African countries, amounting to 10 billion dollars.
The announcements were made during the Sino-African Cooperation Forum (Focac) organized in Dakar, Senegal, which focused on African countries’ efforts to boost their economies hit by the pandemic.
“China will provide Africa with an additional one billion doses of vaccine, of which 600 million will be donated and 400 million in other forms, such as the establishment of production facilities on the ground,” the Chinese president said in an online speech.
Egypt has begun production of the Chinese vaccine Sinovac. Other projects are at a less advanced stage, such as in South Africa and Senegal. According to China’s Deputy Minister of Commerce, Ren Hongbin, his country has delivered more than 160 million doses of vaccine to Africa.
“We need to continue our solidarity fight against Covid. We need to prioritize the protection of the population and fill the vaccination gap,” Xi said, referring to vaccination delays in Africa.
