The lead attributed to centre-left former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (2003-2010) over far-right head of state Jair Bolsonaro remained unchanged at 12 percentage points ahead of the first round of Brazil’s presidential election on October 2, a rolling poll showed the findings of which were made public yesterday Monday.
The poll by the IPEC institute — formerly IBOPE — has 76-year-old Lula garnering 44% of voter intentions, compared to 32% for 67-year-old Jair Bolsonaro, ahead of the first round. These percentages remained unchanged from the institute’s previous survey, released two weeks ago.
In a possible runoff on Oct. 30, if neither candidate gets the 50 percent plus one vote needed for an outright victory, Lula will be elected with 50 percent of the vote to Jair Bolsonaro’s 37 percent, according to the same research. This difference of 13 points is reduced compared to the immediately previous survey (–3%).
The IPEC poll was conducted by the personal interview method of a representative sample of 2,000 voters from August 26 to 28. The margin of statistical error is ±2%.
