Republican senator warns of ‘riots in the streets’ if Trump is prosecuted

Lindsey Graham has warned that there will be “riots in the streets” of the United States of America if former Republican President Donald Trump is indicted.

“If they try to impeach President Trump … we will literally have riots in the streets,” the Republican senator from South Carolina told Fox News. “I’m worried about the country.”

Although the incriminating evidence against the former president is now a mountain, the GOP senator stressed that for most Republicans, there is no doubt that an effort is underway by prosecutors close to Democrats to politically destroy the real estate mogul.

“Most Republicans, myself included, believe that when it comes to Trump, the issue is not the law. The issue is crushing him” politically, he insisted.

Mr Graham, like other top figures in the faction, briefly severed ties with the former president after his supporters attacked the federal Capitol on January 6, 2021. The senator, who sometimes plays golf with the businessman, had he even says that their relationship is “over”.

But within a few weeks, he made excuses for Donald Trump’s actions and got back on the MAGA train, according to a New York Daily News report relayed by the German Agency.

Mr. Graham is currently fighting a subpoena to testify before a grand jury in Georgia about Mr. Trump’s attempt to force state officials to overturn the outcome of the 2020 election, when he lost to Democratic President Joe Biden in that state.

He continues to defend the former president despite the discovery of boxes of classified, even top secret, documents at his luxury home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.

A few months before the midterm elections, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating Mr. Trump because he took classified documents with him when he left the White House and did not return them despite being subpoenaed.

Like some other officials in the faction, Lindsey Graham has invoked Hillary Clinton’s email series when she was secretary of state to argue that Donald Trump should not be prosecuted under the Espionage Act or for obstruction of justice.

“Hillary Clinton had a server set up in her basement,” he blurted out, without mentioning that the Justice Department had investigated the former first lady and secretary of state before deciding not to prosecute her.

Tens of millions of Americans — the majority of Republican supporters — still believe the theory that Donald Trump’s loss in the 2020 presidential election was rigged, even though there is no proof of it.
