Pride Month should prioritize rights of the LGBTQIAP+ population, says expert

June marks LGBTQIAP+ Pride month. For lawyer and consultant in diversity and inclusion Luanda Pires, the date should go beyond celebrations.

“This is the month to bring the claims of the LGBTQIAP+ population for rights to the center of society”, he said, to CNN Radio on CNN Plural.

According to her, there is a need to search for more security for the community.

“Brazil is still one of the most unsafe countries for LGBTQIAP+ people, we kill more people than East African countries, where the death penalty is still criminalized.”

Luanda reinforced that it is important to “bring data, desires and needs for protection, more than celebration.”

At the same time, however, she points out that there have been advances, especially in recent decades.

“The criminalization of LGBTphobia, for example, we are one of the only ones in the world with this legislation. With regard to the formal construction of rights, we have made a lot of progress, ”he said.
